tenoko1: (Podfic)

I really like listening to podfics- fanfiction in audio format like an audio book. They're great for the gym, on the way to work, road trips, waiting on laundry to finish, doing the dishes, cooking, or basically anything where you can multitask. I also like to record my vocabulary lessons and listen to them, so I can be studying while doing something else.

The problem, and I don't know of a better word really, that I've run into, and in only on instance so far is that sometimes there is a podficcer who I cannot tolerate as the reader. One in particular, that even if a fic sounds fabulous, I will save it to read rather than downloading the podfic version if because the way she reads just makes me angry. She sounds so horribly bored and all of her characters sound whiny and the two fics I've listened to of hers I got maybe 3-5 mins into it and had to turn it off, I couldn't stand anymore.

I know there's back and forth among podficcers as to what they can and can't tolerate when it come to what they listen and a lot of it generally deals with accents, which personally, I think is silly. As long as I can understand what you are saying, I don't care where you hail from and how it affects your inflections. In fact, a lot of accents will make an already adorable scene even cuter because of the way the reader says things. And with my being southern, there's no shortage of slips when my accept is quite obvious in my readings, though I try very hard to keep my voice neutral.

Has anyone else run into a problem where they could not listen to either an audio book or podfic because the reader killed it for you? Perhaps so much so you wanted to re-record it yourself? I remember her name and always just by pass her when searching for fics now, while on the flip side, other readers stand out and I take a second look at perhaps whatever they did because "Oh hey! I listened to this-and-this by this person and they were great! What's this story about?"

Is it considered rude to offer to podfic a fic that has already been podfic? Probably, plus it can also get chaotic with multiple versions, but I think that could also be fun. PODFIC ALL THE THINGS!!!!!

The narrator didn't do a good job, eh? I read them, so I can't comment on the quality. I actually own one book on audio and I think I won it in a raffle. It's Twilight, oddly enough. I don't think I've ever listened to it.

Holy god damn, it was awful. The audio was this old lady who was trying to do teenage voices and she talked SO....SLOWLY....I....WANTED....TO......DIE. Anyway, it was so bad that I gave up and bought the book after the first chapter. I thought I could listen to it on audio at the gym but noooo.

See, this makes me want to turn around record it myself just to see if i can do a better job than a professional, but given your low opinion, I doubt doing so would be much of an achievement. lol

IT WAS SO BAD. Sorry 80-year-old woman, you do not sound like a 16-year-old girl.

I don't think that it is in poor taste to redo a podfic. There are a lot of fics and readers out there. Somewhere there must be duplicates.

I do agree that sometimes the way things are read can be a turn off. It alters the way I see a scene at times.

If Hollywood can reboot a terrible franchise then I say definitely redo a podfic and improve it. Just so long as you don't get into trouble for somebody else's work.

I haven't listened to many podcasts but I do recall the cassette tapes we listened to on long road trips, most of them read-alouds of classic kids books. The best was Bunnicula where the narrator gave the household pets, the parents, and children different voices.

I like to stretch my voice with a hint of sarcasm or drama queen when reading to kids too. Especially Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. "Mooooooother! He calls me Brown-eyes! Moooooother, he's not putting away the tools like you said to!"
